Modular Air Pruning Pot All in One Nursery System for Expanding Tree Production

What separates this pot from a fixed mould is that it grows with the tree. Seedlings start in the smallest round, and as the trunk callipers up, larger panels attach to the existing base with lock screws, expanding the pot a step at a time instead of repotting into a bigger container each season. Air pruning runs through every stage, keeping the root ball fibrous from the first week to the sale gate. The wall is UV resistant HDPE with an anti-ageing formula, built for years of sun in a container yard. Sizes run 20 to 70 cm and every stage shares the same fixing system, so one spares box keeps a production line running.

Product Description

A fixed pot and a growing tree are always slightly out of step: the container is either too big for the young root ball or too tight by the second season. This system closes the gap by letting the pot expand in steps. Seedlings start in the smallest round, and each growth stage attaches a larger panel onto the same build with lock screws, so the root ball keeps its shape while the wall moves outward.

How the system grows with the tree

Expansion is a panel change, not a repot. The base and fixing points stay put; a taller or wider panel set replaces the current wall, and lock screws hold the new ring true. Because the root ball is never pulled from its container, the fine roots that took weeks to build are not shaken loose at the worst moment. Air pruning carries on through every stage: the perforated wall keeps drying the tips that reach it, so the root ball gets denser as it grows instead of coiling into the shape of whatever pot it happens to sit in. The whole range runs on UV resistant HDPE with an anti-ageing formula, which is what lets the same build stand outdoors season after season without the wall going chalky or the fixing holes stripping. It is the same wall system used across the air pruning pot family, from starter sizes upward.

Where expanding pots fit in a production line

Tree and shrub producers are the main users: one line of pots carries stock from the first potting after the seedling tray stage all the way to dispatch, with a panel change at each caliper step instead of a new container. Landscape nurseries use it for specimen stock that sells standing in its pot, because the buyer sees a finished root ball rather than a plant that has just been moved. Fruit and forestry programmes take it where labour for repotting is the bottleneck: fewer repots, fewer shock weeks, and one spares box for the whole yard.

Panel changes, lock screws and spares

A panel change takes a screwdriver and a spare pair of hands on the larger sizes. The lock screws that hold each ring unscrew and re-seat in the same holes, so the fixing line never grows ragged from repeated stage changes. Panels that come off a seedling-size pot are not scrap: they go back to the starter line for the next batch. Damaged parts are ordered per piece, and replacement panels ship from stock, which keeps a nursery out of the situation where one cracked wall stalls a whole potting week.

Sizes, packing and order detail

Diameters and heights run 20 to 70 cm, and base plates cover 20 to 60 cm so the graduated stages fit one line. Panels ship flat and stack tight for freight, and each stage is packed so a growing programme can order one level at a time. Print and packaging run to your own label, and samples let you test the panel change against your own stock before committing a season to it. For stock that leaves the nursery tree-sized, our tree build air pruning pots carry the same fixing system at the top of the range. Production practice and nursery economics are covered in the field by HortiDaily and FreshPlaza.

Frequently asked questions

Does expanding the pot disturb the root ball?
No. The base stays under the root ball and the new panels attach around it, so the fine roots grown into the current wall space are not torn out or shaken loose. The change happens around the roots, not through them.

Why use UV resistant HDPE instead of a standard grade?
Container stock can stand outdoors for two or more seasons before dispatch. Ordinary plastic turns chalky and the fixing holes strip out under that sun load; the anti-ageing compound keeps the wall stiff and the screw threads clean for the working life of the pot.

Can one pot really cover several stages?
The base and fixing pattern carry from the smallest round to the largest, so the same build moves up a stage at a time. That is the point of the system: fewer containers per tree, and no storage hall full of pots in sizes that are only used for a few months.

Send the stages and quantities your production line runs, and we will come back with the packing plan and lead time.
