A tree is not a season crop. A sapling may spend two or three years in the same container before it goes out, which changes what the bag has to do: survive several winters rather than one summer, and hold a root system that grows every year without the roots circling the wall. The felt wall stops the roots that reach it, so the plant branches them back into the medium. The bag being light and folding flat covers the other side, because a nursery moving thousands of trees is moving weight and volume as much as plants.

Product Description

Most of what is written about grow bags assumes a crop that goes in and comes out inside one season. A tree or a fruit sapling does not work that way, and the container has to be chosen for a plant that is going to sit in it for years.

A Tree Spends Years in the Bag

Over two or three years in a container a root system grows from a few inches to something that has filled the medium, and if the wall is smooth those roots end up wound round the inside in a tight spiral. That spiral is the problem: after planting out, a circling root keeps circling, and a tree with a circling root establishes slowly and blows over more easily in its first years. The felt wall stops the roots that reach it, so they branch back into the medium instead, and what reaches the planting hole is a root system that will spread. On a tree the difference matters more than it does on a lettuce, because the tree is going to be in the ground for decades.

Nurseries, Reforestation and Fruit Tree Propagation

The bags are used in nurseries growing standard and ornamental trees, in reforestation programmes where the volume of stock is measured in thousands, and for fruit tree propagation and grafted material that has to be held for a season or more before it goes out. Because the fabric passes water and air, a bag standing on a nursery pad through a wet winter does not leave the roots sitting in a saturated medium, and through a hot summer it does not cook them the way a black plastic pot can. Growers ordering trees from the same nursery often add a planting bag for the smaller material, and where the nursery also shades young stock, the shade net range covers that separately.

Light, Flat Packed and Reused Across Cycles

Weight and volume are what a tree nursery actually pays for, because both the media and the containers move twice: once into the nursery and once out to the planting site. A fabric bag is a fraction of the weight of a ceramic or heavy plastic pot, and it folds flat when it is empty, so the same vehicle carries several times as many when they are going out empty to be filled. The bags are also reusable across cycles, which means the container cost spreads over the years the tree spends in them rather than being written off at the first potting. Where a smaller reusable container is wanted for herbaceous stock, a grow bag with air pruning seams is also available.

Sizes, Packing and Order Detail

Sizes run from 5 gallon up to 100 gallon as standard, with anything outside that made to order, and the same bag is often ordered across several sizes as one planting programme scales. Colour, logo and handle configuration are set with the order, and a free sample is available so the fabric can be checked before a bulk run. Tell us the species, the size, how long the trees stay in the bag and the quantity, and we will confirm the specification. Buyers tracking what is going into tree nurseries and reforestation programmes can follow trade coverage such as HortiDaily and FreshPlaza for what growers are installing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can a tree stay in the bag?
Two or three years is normal for a sapling before it goes out, and the bag is reusable across those cycles. Tell us the species and the programme length and we will advise on size.

Does a fabric bag stop the roots circling?
The roots that reach the wall are stopped by the air rather than deflected, so they branch back into the medium. On a tree that is what decides how quickly it establishes after planting.

Why does the weight of the container matter?
The containers move twice, in and out, and a fabric bag is a fraction of the weight of a rigid pot and folds flat empty. On a programme of thousands of trees that is the largest single saving.

Tell us the species, the size, how long the trees stay in the bag and the quantity, and we will confirm the specification, the sample and the packing that suit your order.
