Transplant shock is what happens when a plant is moved and its roots are damaged in the process, and in a rigid pot that is most of them. The root system either circles the wall or grips the base, so it has to be cut or torn to get the plant out. In a felt bag the roots meet air at the wall and stop, which leaves a fibrous ball that lifts out whole, so the plant goes into the ground with its root system intact. The handles are Box-X stitched so a full bag can be carried to the planting hole rather than dragged.

Product Description

Transplant shock is what happens when a plant is moved and its roots are damaged doing it. In a rigid pot that is most of them.

Why the root ball comes out whole

In a smooth container the roots either circle the wall or grip the base, so the ball has to be cut or torn before the plant can be moved. In a felt bag the root tips meet air at the wall and stop there, which is what leaves a fibrous ball that lifts out in one piece. The plant then goes into the ground with its root system intact and starts growing instead of recovering, which is what the zero transplant shock claim actually rests on.

Box-X stitched handles, and what they carry

The handle is sewn with a Box-X stitch, which is the pattern used where a webbing anchor has to hold under cyclic load, and the handle itself is reinforced rather than single layer. The fabric is tear resistant, so a full bag can be carried to the planting hole by its handles instead of being lifted by the body. The felt is also permeable, which lets surplus water drain naturally and stops the compost staying wet between waterings. The wall system is shared across the air pruning pot range.

Base, dimensions and lifting

The base is finished flat and stitched so the bag stands level while it is filled, and the 7 gallon format runs at 35 cm across by 30 cm high, which is the figure needed to work out compost volumes for a run. Larger formats carry proportionally larger anchors rather than the same handle on every size, so the carrying capacity matches what the bag is asked to hold. Starter trays sit alongside in the seedling and propagation range.

Sizes, Packing and Order Detail

Tell us the diameters, volumes and colours your programme works to, since the felt is needled to order and a printed logo can be added on programme quantities. Orders ship in bags, on pallets or in cartons, and the flat bag stores in a fraction of the space a stack of rigid pots takes. The wider soft container range sits in the planting bag range. Container and growing media supply is covered at HortiDaily and FreshPlaza.

Frequently asked questions

What is zero transplant shock?
Roots meet air at the felt instead of circling, so the root ball lifts out whole and the plant goes into the ground undamaged.

What is a Box-X stitch for?
It is the stitch pattern used where a webbing anchor has to hold under repeated load, so the handle does not pull out of the wall.

How are bulk orders packed?
In bags, on pallets or in cartons, with mixed sizes and colours combined in one load.
